I find myself typing up a blog and an obituary at the same time tonight. A Master at the school I teach at passed away this week, and I hope that one day another young Master will spend his Friday doing this for me. So I won’t be my usual silly self and will instead say…
Obituary for Mr Dickerson
We have heard with sadness about the passing away of Mr George Geddes Dickerson who taught on the staff at Jeppe from 1946 to 1963. After leaving Jeppe he went to Hyde Park High as vice principal and then on to Northcliff High as Headmaster. Even though he left Jeppe so long ago, he retained his links with the school and regularly attended the Cape Town old boys dinner until in recent years he became too frail to do so. Jed or Ox as he was known to generations of school boys attended Dale College and Rhodes University. He was a Latin teacher of distinction. Most Jeppe old boys for whom Latin remained a mystery will remember his outstanding contribution in the extramural environment. According to the 1963 school magazine, his great loves were rugby, athletics and dramatics. He was the organizing secretary for both rugby and athletics and Chairman of the Dramatic Society for many years. He also coached cricket and ran a Literary Society on Friday nights. He was a housemaster at Oribi and Mpiti for a time and then Senior Housemaster of Koodoo.
The funeral is on Monday 11th August at 11:00 at Christ Church in Constantia. It would be great if some of our Cape Town old boys could attend and represent the Jeppe family and express our condolences to his sons John and David and their families.
My thanks to Ex-Headmaster Tait for these words.
