This may be of interest to those of you in Cape Town interested/curious about natural/homebirths
Home Birth is a valid and safe yet overlooked birthing option.
South Africa has one of the highest caesarean rates in the world (on average 70% in private hospitals).
Women are realising that in a hospital environment their options and freedom to…[Read more]

Baie dankie. Baie se dat daar kan komplikasie kom, maar ek gaan by Medi Clinic kraam, so die suster daar het gese hul beveel watergeboorte aan. Die vorige keer toe ek gekraam het, was baie moeilik, my water het gebreek en ek kon nie ontsluit nie, 26 uur later was kleinding eers gebore, sy hartklop het gedaal na 91 en my bloeddruk was by die 190.…[Read more]

Hallo Anelda,

I am very pro natural birth and loathe the way gynaes railroad first-time moms into scheduled c-sections or inductions that invariably lead to emergency c-sections, without a valid reason.
I had my first daughter at home and it was the best thing for her. I wish I could offer my new baby the same gentle start but she has been diagnosed with a CHD…[Read more] - Load More

That’s really great Eunice. Where are you based? First things 1stis to find an independent midwife – they are the ones who do homebirths. She will then see your through your pregnancy & advise you on booking at a back up facility (for any interventions) w.r.t birth pools, you can hire from http://www.birthworks.co.za they are a national rental company -…[Read more]
Hi Lana, we’re living in a small town. I am at a gyne in Bloem and going for my next appointment on Friday. A friend of mine gave me some numbers of midwifes in Bloem and I thought I’d just phone to find out more about waterbirths. She has everything and she is a professional nurse (RN, RCN, RPN, midwife, BCur Admin Ed). She gives antenatal…[Read more]
sorry ran out of space…places to soothe your labouring body(your bath – or birthing pool. And then there are the benefits to the baby…Absolutely no chance of your baby going missing or being swopped – it still happens even in pvt hospitals!!
Also your baby is climatized by the germs of your home because of you. in hospital it is exposed to…[Read more]
Oh, and what if there is complications during birth? I think that’s my biggest concern doing a home birth.
Thanks for your help.
God bless
HI Eunice, Great that you have found midwife. All the research shows that a homebirth is as safe as having a hospital birth – in some studies safer! Your midwife is giving you one on one care through your pregnancy, she is there from the time you labour starts & is the one seeing to both you & your baby afterwards. This intimate care means that…[Read more]
As I said before you are being intimately monitored by the midwife throughout labour. your midwife also brings with all the 1st line rescusitation equipment for you & baby as well as antihaemorhagic drugs, iv lines, suction machines, oxygen the whole toot – all of the things that can go wrong in a home setting can be well taken care of by a…[Read more]
Hi Lana, thanks so much!
I don’t know of anyone close who has done a home/water birth. It seems so different and personal and I appreciate all your help. We are seeing the gynecologist on Friday and will discuss the water birth with her as well as home/waterbirth. Don’t know if see is for or against. Then we’d also like to book an appointment…[Read more]
I doubt your gynae will have anything good to say about homebirths. Most gynae’s have NEVER been to a homebirth & DO NOT get training for home or waterbirths!! You must keep in mind that obstetricians are trained to deal with ABnormal pregnancies & labours. unfortunately in pvt practice in SA these dr’s are seeing normal healthy women BUT…[Read more]
Hi Eunice, I had 5 home water births. You can read more about it on my blog http://backtoancientways.blogspot.com/2010/01/why-water-birth-and-assembling-birth.html and you are welcome to contact me for more information if you want to. I so agree with Lana, you need a serious plan. I have some more information on my blog on the ‘situation’ of…[Read more]
